This movie is beautiful right? I love how unique it is from anything you've ever seen. And how about that shot of the panther in the tree when he first turns around... Awe inspiring. Yeah, we learned about the Aztecs and Mayans when I was in school in the 80's.. who knows what they teach now.. but yeah that was world history. The dino that appeared while they were digging in the poo for the phone was supposed to be a Ceratosaurus. Related to T-Rex, but not the same.

My family is from Yucatan Mexico and my grandma and other relatives speak Mayan still. Growing up in the United States we didn't get to learn Mayan but I wish we would've. We still do some Mayan traditions and I do know some words but very little.

In mexico, i was taught that sacrifice to the gods were made in order to make them happy, stop disease and bring forth bountiful crops upon the land.

I watched this as a kid, and it didn't scare me at all. I think because I grew up watching grownups movies and scary movies. And since you noticed the main character zoning out. It was actually his third eye opening, Jaugar paw and his father has third eyes, just like the little girl with the sickness.

In the beginning, the mother in law said the son was useless, now she is deemed useless. I believe she said sorry when she laid her hand on him.😢

watched it witzhout subtitles - it might even be better without imo. I knew a lot more of the historic background - its usefull but not prerequesite to get the story. Its a story of climate change and overuse of land that lead the inka to sacrifice such a increadible amount of people. At some point they had to figure out new sources of hearts to appease their goods in order to send them rain. The girl most likely had the smalpox, which means the europeans allready had reached their lands. That and other new patogens like salmonella wiped out millions of people. Its a marvel that a lot of ther culture survived to that day.

You're not tripping about second Black Panther movie; writers for both movies heavily borrowed from the same Mezoamerican culture for depiction of main antagonistic groups. I say "borrowed", because while Marvel's movie is obvious fantasy, Apocalypto is also closer to that genre than actual history, it just has no obviously fantastical elements that break the vague sense of "historicity".
